Are you being abused:

Not all children who witness domestic violence will grow up to be an abuser or victim, but all children who witness domestic violence will be affected and be at a higher risk of developing into a abuser or victim then a child who does not.

It is important to encourage children to talk to someone they trust about the violence.

Approximately 90% of the children are aware of violence directed at their mother.

Over three million children are at risk of witnessing parental violence every year.

Children are present in 41-55% of homes where police intervene in domestic violence calls.

Abused children are six times more likely to commit suicide.

Children for violent homes have higher risks of drug/alcohol abuse and juvenile delinquency.

Children who witness domestic violence may:

  • Become depressed
  • Withdrawn,
  • Feel lonely and isolated,
  • Suffer from low self-esteem,
  • Decreased concentration that effects school grades,
  • Begin to exhibit aggressive behaviors,
  • Feel responsible or guilty for the violence in their home

Safety Planning for Children:

  • Get help for yourself and for the children.
  • Teach children not to get in the middle of an abusive or violent incident.
  • Teach children to leave the house and go to a neighbor’s during an incident.
  • Teach children to call 911.
  • Designate a ‘safe’ place for children to go during an incident. Go to the child as soon as possible afterwards and reassure the child that you are ok and it is not their fault.
  • During an incident, stay away form the kitchen or bathroom where there may be hard or sharp surfaces and many objects that may be used as weapons.
  • Arrange for the child to talk to someone about his or her feelings.
  • Involve children in school or church activities to help them avoid isolation.
